Agrecovery introduces net recycling
March 30, 2010
Agrecovery is now offering a recycling programme for crop protection net following a successful trial with Villa Maria last year.
‘There was such strong interest in the trial from grape growers and others in the industry that we have decided to move forward without delay, launching a net recovery solution in Hastings and Gisborne during May,’ says Bruce Emerson, director of 3R Group, Agrecovery programme managers.
‘Everyone knows how difficult and expensive it is to dump net and it’s not the ideal disposal option, so recycling is the only logical solution.’
Agrecovery will also be holding a one-off collection event for growers during the winter.
‘We want to introduce growers to the Agrecovery net programme so we’ve decided to do an introductory collection event,’ says Bruce.
At the collection event growers will be able to bring along their net for recycling and have a look at a bin and bag system which Agrecovery is looking to introduce as a more permanent collection system.
‘We’ll have some bags and bins set up on the day so growers can see how the programme might work into the future.
‘There might be a modest charge to the growers on the event day but any funds raised would be returned to the grower associations in each area,’ says Bruce. ‘We’ll be doing the rest for free so it’s a good chance for growers to solve the net disposal problem in a practical low cost way.’
Growers are invited to register now for these collection events by calling Agrecovery on 0800 247 326 and advising how much net they wish to dispose of at the event.
‘This will give us an idea of the volume we’ll be dealing with on the day and we can also let them know the full event details.’
Mr Emerson says Agrecovery is also working closely with a variety of grower associations and major net manufacturers on net recycling to develop a long term funding model.
‘As with all our programmes we aim to keep the costs as low as possible and hope that in time some costs will be shared between the net manufacturers and the growers. We’re working closely with the industry to achieve this.’
