To celebrate the opening of three new collection sites in Northland, Agrecovery Rural Recycling is offering recyclers the chance to win a $300 reward.
The promotion aims to encourage farmers, growers, contractors and golf courses to make the most of this recycling programme for 1 – 60 litre plastic containers. Through the programme empty triple rinsed containers from 56 brand owners of agrichemical, biological, animal health and dairy hygiene products can be recycled for free.
“Anyone who recycles eligible containers through our three new collection sites at Farmlands Kaitaia, Kamo or Dargaville during July and August 2012 will go in the draw to win a $300 voucher to spend with their preferred rural supplier,” says Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery.
According to Duncan recycling of plastic containers in the Northland area has been moderately low compared to other areas in the country.
“We’re expecting these new sites to make a big impact on the amount of containers recycled in the region.
“Farmlands stores are easily accessible and they will be accepting eligible containers Monday to Fridays from 8:30am to 4pm, so that should suit most people.
“It’s also a useful prize, and our previous promotions have shown that it’s just the encouragement that some need to get on board and make the most of this free recycling programme.”
Farmlands have been very supportive of the Agrecovery programme since it started in 2007, stocking wrap recycling bags in store and helping promote the programmes, as well as now hosting eight Agrecovery collection sites in the North Island.
Geoff Taylor, General Manager of Operations for Farmlands is pleased to increase support for Agrecovery as more and more farmers and growers get involved with the programme.
“I’m a grower myself and I know that sustainable disposal of farm waste is becoming a major compliance issue in our industry, particularly as levels of production continue to intensify. It’s good to be able to offer this valuable service through our stores, both to our shareholders and the wider rural community.”
Agrecovery has over 70 collection sites located across New Zealand, from Kaitaia to Winton in Southland. The collected containers are shredded by a mobile processing truck and processed into underground electrical cable covers here in New Zealand.
Nationally the volume of plastic recycled through the programme has grown significantly over the last two years, with increased volumes expected again this year.
“We saw a record 49% increase in the volume of plastic collected between July 2010 to June 2011 (compared to the same period in the previous year), and we’re expecting another great result when figures are finalised for the 2011/2012 year,” says Duncan.
This growth in recycling volumes reflects the increasing pressure being brought to bear on New Zealand exporters to prove that agricultural and horticultural practices truly are “clean and green”.
“We hope that increasing the accessibility and the opening hours of the sites here in Northland will give farmers and growers in the area every reason to make responsible disposal choices for their plastic waste.”

- Kaitaia – Farmlands, 31 North Park Drive. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4pm.
- Kamo – Farmlands, 2 Springs Flat Rd. Open Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm.
- Dargaville – Farmlands, 1 River Rd. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4pm.
- Waipapa – PGG Wrightson, Cnr State Highway 10 & Pataka Lane. Open Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm. (Recycling through the existing Waipapa site is not included in the July/August promotion for new sites.)
Containers must be empty, triple rinsed and free from residue inside and out. All containers will be inspected before being accepted. Only containers belonging to the 56 participating brand owners are free to recycle.
